Travel Tips - How To Handle When You Have Too Much Baggage?

McAfee, Inc

Souvenirs and cheap bargains are usually the culprits behind those extra luggage kilos when you leave. And this also happens to me when I went back from Tawau, Sabah, to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

I had my luggage extra for 10 kilos and had to pay for more than hundred to load my extra luggage - the souvenirs, the cheap bargains of shirts, blouses and etc.

However, as I have myself experienced this, I have some tips for people who loves shopping and faces the same situation. Pick up these tips so you will never tip the check-in luggage scales.

  • Write In - Airlines such as Malaysian Airlines (MAS) give allowance of an extra five to ten kilos of baggage check-in weight to students. Write in to the headquarters once you have gotten your ticket (and before you take-off) to make this request.
  • Check In Extra Early - Checking in earlier than the requisite two hours before flight, will make it easier to check-in those extra loads. The ground staffs is usually and likely to be more lenient then as there is less people in the line and they are not in the hurry.
  • Ask For Help - If you are in the airport and you notice that other passengers are traveling light, do not be afraid to ask for their help. Politely ask them if you could check-in with them. No harm for trying, right?
  • Stuff It In - Make full use of your handbags, valise and even laptop cases. Some laptop have many pockets and you can just fully utilize them by stuffing some of your things in the pockets. but please, do not be too obvious until you can see your laptop cases turn into a blowfish.

And if in the event that you are charged for excessive baggage, consider redeeming your Frequent Flyer points for extra baggage allowance. On the other hand, if you are traveling with friends, make sure that you buy the tickets in group as it will help you in this matter. And you can also use the relatively cheaper freight services such as ABDA airfreight, which is available in major airports all over the world.
