Congratulations! You have just earned that promotion. But with the bigger paycheck and advancement opportunities come pitfalls such as jealous colleagues. Here is how to handle the change gracefully.

Stay The Same Around The Click

A promotion can stir things up in the office if you have been particularly close with some colleagues. Be prepared for some resentment or jealousy from the colleague who lost the promotion to you. Deal with these instances by acting natural. For example, if you were the joker in the group, continue doing so. Just be the person you have always been.

Gradually Ease Into Your New Position

New power can easily get to your head. When you are armed with a new title, power and better pay, it may be tempting to start giving orders as soon as possible. Turn to your manager and peers for guidance during the first few weeks and treat it as a training time. Your humility and interest in learning will grant you brownie points with old and new colleagues.

Use Your New Tools

For example, the expense account or assistant your new role came with. Do not confuse these benefits as perks; these are tools to help you get your job done. However, refrain from abusing the privileges either. Get your assistant to handle things like faxes and scheduling so you can better focus on your duties.
