Your salad may be harboring more hidden fat than you realize - or contain no nutrients. So, now, it is a tip on how to keep them plenty delish and delightful.

Which Leaves?
  • Killer : Iceberg lettuce which has virtually zero nutrients and flavor.
  • Winner : Toss in mesclun, romaine, arugula or spinach. The darker the greens the better as these taste better than iceberg, and are packed with more iron, calcium, vitamins C and B, and folate.
Protein?
  • Killer : Bacon or salami bits are fatty, salty and not a good protein source.
  • Winner : One tablespoon of paramesan cheese contains two grams of protein and 55mg of calcium. Other protein packed foods include hard boiled eggs, canned tuna, or grilled meat.
Dressing?
  • Killer : Two tablespoons of creamy salad dressings like Thousand Island, French or blue cheese can contain as much as 16gm of fat.
  • Winner : Drizzle olive oil over the veggie (it has mono-unsaturated fat). Alternatively, use vinaigrette or vinegar which contain fewer calories.
